Elizabeth Olsen and Tom Holland say it’s not fair to call Marvel movies “theme park movies.”

Great directors like Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola have been critical of Marvel movies for a long time. Olsen told The Independent that she didn’t like these words.

She told me:

I wouldn’t say I like it when people act like Marvel movies aren’t as good as other movies. I’m not saying that we make independent arthouse movies, but I do think that criticism hurts our team, which bothers me. Some of the best set designers, costume designers, and camera operators lose their worth because of them. I think that making fun of them that way is a way to make fun of all the people who work on them and make award-winning movies.

She said that she knows Marvel makes a certain kind of movie for a large audience, but that shouldn’t make people forget the good things in the film.

From the point of view of an actor, I can see that. I know that there are many kinds of performances. But I think making fun of Marvel is the many talented people who work on these movies. I get kind of angry about it.

Even Tom Holland had something to say about the criticisms of the Marvel universe. The actor had written a letter to Martin Scorsese in particular.

“Would you like to make a Marvel movie?” you could ask Scorsese. He told The Hollywood Reporter that he has never made a movie, so he doesn’t know what it’s like. I’ve been in both Marvel movies and Oscar-nominated movies. The only difference is that Oscar-nominated films are a lot more expensive. But the way you get into the character and how the director chooses the story arc and the characters are the same; they’re more significant. So I think they are real works of art.

When you make these movies, you know millions of people will see them, for better or worse. When you make a small, independent movie, on the other hand, if it isn’t perfect, no one will watch it. This puts you under a different kind of pressure. You can also ask people like Benedict Cumberbatch, Robert Downey Jr., and Scarlett Johansson, who have made both Oscar-winning and superhero movies, and they’ll tell you they’re the same, just on a different scale.
